1. Please tell us your story leading up to arriving in that city and your relationship with Omondi.<\/b><\/h5>

It all started when I was working as the second camera operator on The Constant Gardener<\/i> by Fernando Meirelles. We filmed much of the movie in Kibera. I was deeply struck by the extreme poverty of the area and wanted to do something to communicate to others what I had seen.<\/p>

The creative process began with a series of interviews with orphaned children. They told me about their problems, their loneliness, and asked for help with books, food, uniforms\u2026 When I asked them about their dreams, almost all of them said they wanted to be pilots \u2014 to fly far away. That\u2019s where the idea began: I wanted to explore why so many children want to leave, and to make us feel and reflect on that reality.<\/p>

Omondi is a character created for the film \u2014 he represents all the children I interviewed. I chose him because of his gaze, his voice \u2014 I felt he conveyed the sadness of his peers.

2. You are the producer, writer, cinematographer, and author of the work. Do you think the video creator should be \u201ca jack of all trades\u201d out of necessity, or because it has its advantages? Please explain your answer.<\/b><\/h5>

In my case, it was out of necessity \u2014 I needed to make a film shot in a documentary style, without large crews or lighting setups. I had to be as invisible as possible.<\/p>

That said, my collaboration with my editor, Kim Bica, and with the music supervisor was wonderful \u2014 they contributed immensely. I believe that whenever possible, collaborating with other like-minded artists is ideal and always improves the film.

3. This story has earned you the award for Best Documentary at CanariasMediafest. How did you get involved with the festival? What do you think of their work? How do you feel after receiving this recognition?<\/b><\/h5>

I reached the festival through Mar Muro and her company Lolita Peliculitas<\/i>, who are helping me distribute the short film to festivals.<\/p>

I feel deeply honored to have received this award for a work that blends fiction and reality.

4. How did you feel when you found out you had won?<\/b><\/h5>

1. Cu\u00e9ntenos, por favor, su historia hasta llegar a esa ciudad y su relaci\u00f3n con Omondi.<\/strong><\/h5>

Todo empez\u00f3 pues estaba trabajando como operador de la segunda camara en la pel\u00edcula El Jardinero Fiel de FernandoMeirelles. Rodamos gran parte de la pel\u00edcula en Kibera. Impresionado por la situaci\u00f3n de extrema pobreza del lugar, quise hacer una algo para comunicar a otros lo que v\u00ed. El proceso de creacci\u00f3n emepz\u00f3 con una serie de entrevistas a ni\u00f1os huerfanos. Me contaban sus problemas, su soledad, me ped\u00edan ayuda para libros, comida, uniformes.. Al preguntarles sobre sus sue\u00f1os, casi todos quer\u00edan ser pilotos, volar muy lejos. Ah\u00ed empez\u00f3 la idea, quise explorar porque tantos ni\u00f1os quieren irse a otro lugar, y hacernos sentir, reflexionar al respecto.<\/p>

Omondi es un personaje creado para la pel\u00edcula, es\u00a0 un representante de todos los ni\u00f1os que entrevist\u00e9. Le escog\u00ed por su mirada, por su voz, porque sent\u00ed que comunicaba la tristeza de sus compa\u00f1eros.<\/p>


2. Usted es productor, guionista, c\u00e1mara y autor de la obra \u00bfcree que el videocreador debe ser todoterreno por necesidad o porque tiene sus ventajas? Por favor, exponga su respuesta.<\/strong><\/h5>

En mi caso fue por la necesidad de hacer una pel\u00edcula rodada en estilo documental, sin grandes equipos ni luces. Necesitaba ser invisible en la medida de lo posible. Por otro lado, mi colaborac\u00edon con mi editora Kim Bica y con la supervisora musical fue maravillosa, ellas aportaron much\u00edsimo. Creo que en la medida de lo posible colaborar con otros artistas de ideas afines es ideal y siempre mejora la pel\u00edcula.<\/p>


3. Esta historia le ha servido para ganar el premio al mejor documental del CanariasMediafest \u00bfc\u00f3mo lleg\u00f3 hasta el Festival? \u00bfQu\u00e9 le parece su labor? \u00bfC\u00f3mo se siente tras este reconocimiento?<\/strong><\/h5>

Llegu\u00e9 al festival a trav\u00e9s de Mar Muro y su empresa Lolita Peliculitas, me est\u00e1n ayudando a distribuir el cortometraje en festivales.<\/p>

Siento un gran honor de haber recibido este galard\u00f3n por una obra que mezcla la ficci\u00f3n y la realidad.<\/p>
