An Interview with Diego Quemada-Diez, Director of La Morena

1. Is this your first time at the Morelia International Film Festival?

Yes, I tried to get in with another short film last year, but it wasn’t accepted.

This time it was, and it’s a great honor.

 

2. Why were you interested in addressing this subject?

I spent some time living in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Mazatlán dedicated to prostitution, and there I had the opportunity to meet very interesting people from whom I believe we all have much to learn. The theme that interested me at that point in my life was the difficulty many people labeled as “different” face in integrating into society — and how they reveal hidden aspects of ourselves that we need to pay attention to.

 

3. What was the biggest challenge you faced in making your film?

The challenge was the aimless search — setting aside all preconceived ideas and simply dedicating myself to truly listening to the character who opened up to me and wanted to tell me everything about their life.

 

4. What are your expectations for the Morelia International Film Festival?

This piece is part of a feature-length film made up of several characters. I hope that La Morena generates enough interest to help raise funds, edit, and complete the full-length version of this documentary.

 

5. What kind of films would you like to continue making? (In terms of genre and theme)

I’m interested in the social genre — or rather, in cinema that glorifies the human being, that brings attention back to what’s happening in our society, in the world, and in our suffering brothers and sisters.

1. ¿Es tu primera vez en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia?

Sí, había tratado de entrar con otro corto el año pasado pero no pudo ser.

Esta vez sí y es un gran honor.

 

2. ¿Por qué te interesó abordar este tema?

Estuve un tiempo viviendo en una colonia en las afueras de Mazatlan dedicada a la prostitución y allí tuve la oportunidad de conocer gente muy interesante de la que creo todos tenemos cosas que aprender. El tema que me interesaba en ese momento de mi vida era sobre las dificultades de integración de muchas personas consideradas “diferentes” por la sociedad y cómo ellos y ellas nos muestran aspectos ocultos que necesitamos observar.

 

3. ¿Cuál fue el reto más importante que enfrentaste en la realización de tu cinta?

La búsqueda sin objetivo alguno, dejar de lado toda idea preconcebida, tan solo dedicarme a escuchar atentamente al personaje que se abría a mí y que quería contarme todo sobre su vida.

 

4. ¿Qué expectativas tienes del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia?

Esta pieza es parte de un largometraje compuesto de varios personajes. Me gustaría que la Morena cree suficiente interés para poder recoger fondos, editar y completar este documental de mayor duración.

 

5. ¿Qué tipo de películas te gustaría continuar realizando? (En cuanto a género y temática)

Me interesara el género social, o más bien el cine que glorifica al ser humano, para devolver la atención a lo que ocurre en nuestra sociedad, en el mundo, en el hermano que sufre.
